Overview

The Senior R&D Project Manager is responsible for defining, scheduling and managing a portfolio of key projects, ensuring delivery of the R&D functions’ objectives and overall business priorities. R&D projects will be related to the electrification of commercial vehicles working with new technologies typically between TRL4-7. Projects are undertaken at the company’s R&D hub in Greenford, London but also collaborate with project teams located in Indianapolis, USA. The R&D hub is a fast-paced environment with small, agile teams and is ideally suited to someone who enjoys a mixture of creating and improving existing processes with hands-on management of projects themselves.


Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK. Candidates already in the UK and working under Tier 2 Sponsorship will also be considered.

Responsibilities and Activities

 

Project Management:

  • Lead and manage a portfolio of technical R&D projects through their entire lifecycle, ensuring project objectives are met.
  • Lead project planning activities, coordinating inputs and project development through internal approvals to build realistic execution plans and identify project level risks.
  • Create and maintain high quality project documentation, ensuring alignment to internal process and change management.
  • Coordinate cross-functional project teams to deliver on Project objectives, ensuring appropriate communication, documentation, and governance.
  • Support or lead onboarding and management of additional contracted resource as required for Project needs
  • Report status, key risks and issues to the Program Manager, Senior Management Team and Project Steering Group. Evaluate mitigation plans to deliver proposals as required.
  • Define and maintain project budgets, reporting monthly actuals and forecasts to the Program Manager.
  • Lead project-level meetings both internally and externally as per project needs.
  • Capture Project Lessons Learned, identifying and driving actions required to aid continuous improvement.
  • Create and present technical summaries to project stakeholders, including results, scope changes, issues and business benefits realised.

 

PMO Team Responsibilities:

  • Support the PMO Lead with incremental development of internal Project Management Process.
  • Support and coach other team members (project managers / interns) with best practice and some on-the-job training
  • Own a specific area of PM-related process, e.g. Lessons Learned
  • Provide input into ongoing business strategic planning activities based on project work, outcomes on ongoing activities


Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Proven experience managing/leading multiple and/or high-complexity projects through development and execution.
  • Effective management of Project budgets, including forecasting and reporting of actuals
  • Proven knowledge of different Project Management methodologies and associated tools, both Predictive (Traditional/Waterfall) and Adaptive (Agile)
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (e.g. ISO 9001 standard) and Quality Process development methodologies (e.g. SixSigma DMAIC/DMEDI or similar) preferable.
  • Very strong communication skills at all levels of the business across email, large meetings, conference calls and one to one
  • Proven ability to plan projects – particularly for estimating time and resource needed
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills – quick to understand and communicate the relevant technical expert and management stakeholder needs
  • Proactive and takes initiative – spots potential problems and tackles them early, thinks of ways to do things better and takes action to make the business more efficient
  • A desire to create new processes and process tools and get them adopted by the project teams
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office software as well as familiarity with common project management software tools (e.g MS Project, JIRA, Monday.com)


Desirable:

  • Experience in aerospace / automotive R&D type environment – ideally powertrain/propulsion domain
  • Experience working in a technical role (as an engineer or similar) on electrified powertrain projects
