Overview

 

The role involves a diverse range of design and testing tasks for a talented, flexible and passionate engineer with experience in electronics, electrical and control engineering. This person must relish the challenge of producing outstanding results on his/her own without the need for constant supervision.

This position is embedded within an advanced engineering R&D team working at the forefront of commercial vehicle electrification as a Tier 1 supplier of propulsion products to the commercial vehicle industry. The project work will involve research, design, build and test around propulsion and energy storage systems for electric commercial vehicles including on-vehicle work itself.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK. Candidates already in the UK and working under a Tier 2 Sponsorship will also be considered.


Responsibilities and Activities

  • Electrical system (both high and low voltage) design, integration and schematic capture for a variety of electrified propulsion and energy storage systems for automotive (large commercial) vehicles;
  • Capture requirements for new system layouts and prototype system developments based on commercial vehicle standards;
  • Design and layout of high and low voltage electrical distribution units for propulsion, batteries and ancillary systems on-board vehicles;
  • Electrical harness design for manufacture;
  • Liaise with Mechanical, Controls and Testing departments to ensure smooth and reliable electronics systems integration;
  • Test of electronics to automotive standards – both in-house and external development and validation testing;
  • Research, selection and evaluation of electronic / electrical components / sensors / actuators for prototype system developments;
  • Design, build and test of small electronics assemblies to facilitate prototype system R&D;
  • Research and maintain an advanced understanding of Battery Management System (BMS) electronics for automotive battery packs.

Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Electrical, electronic or equivalent engineering honours degree;
  • Proficient with schematic and harness capture;
  • Knowledgeable with automotive electronics and sensors;
  • Experience working with vehicles – either passenger car automotive, commercial or industrial vehicles;
  • Proficient in specifying high and low voltage wire gauges and fuse current ratings;
  • Good problem solving skills and adaptability for working in R&D environment;
  • Good communication skills and willingness to work with international teams;
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and interested by the industry and products;
  • Passionate about attention to detail and delivery of high quality content;

    Desirable:

    • Experience with Microsoft Visio or specific schematic and harness capture software;
    • Experience with lithium-ion batteries and battery management systems;
    • Experience with low level communication protocols and standards;
    • Experience with embedded controllers;
    • Experience with road vehicle and drivetrain control systems;
    • Experience with ISO16750, GMW3172 standards;
    • Understanding of vehicle level EMI mitigations, shielding and grounding techniques.
